Texas Hold'em strategy

No-Limit Hold'em rewards patience and pressure. Play fewer hands than you want to, play them aggressively, and let position and pot odds — not hope — make your decisions.

Six habits that win chips

  1. Play tight before the flop. Fold weak hands, especially early; strong starting cards make every later decision easier.
  2. Use your position. Acting last is a huge edge — you see what everyone does before you decide, so play more hands from late seats.
  3. Bet and raise more than you call. Aggression wins pots you have no right to and gets value when you are ahead; limping and calling leaks chips.
  4. Count your pot odds. If the pot lays you 4-to-1 and your draw hits less than one time in five, folding is the winning play.
  5. Bluff with a reason. The best bluffs tell a believable story and have outs to improve — firing blindly into three callers just burns chips.
  6. Mind the stacks. Short stacks want to shove or fold; deep stacks let you play draws and set-mine. Always know how many chips are behind.

Tight, aggressive, and aware

Winning poker is mostly discipline: enter pots with strong hands, take the initiative when you do, and get away cheaply when you are beaten. Doing the simple things well beats chasing every clever bluff.

Position, aggression and pot odds decide far more hands than any single read. Master those three and the fancy plays take care of themselves.
